Sedation Options

Oral & IV sedation

Oral sedation dentistry allows appropriately trained dentists to create a safe and comfortable dental experience for patients who have avoided the dentist out of fear or who might have time restrictions.

Dr. Kvitko has been trained to implement sedation effectively helping a patient become as comfortable and relaxed as possible using well established and proven protocols with a variety of sedation medications administered orally and sublingually (under the tongue). These protocols can be customized for the patient’s individual emotional and physical needs.

Sometimes referred to as ‘relaxation’, ‘sleep’ or ‘anxiety free’ dentistry, this comfortable care is offered at Dr. Kvitko & Associates.

Conscious sedation is a combination of medicines to help you relax (a sedative) and to block pain (an anesthetic) during a medical or dental procedure.

A needle will be carefully placed in a vein in your forearm or back of the hand. Various medications will be administered making you very relaxed, non-apprehensive, and sleepy. You will not be unconscious. Local anesthetics will also be used to control discomfort.

Nitrous Oxide – Laughing Gas

Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax.

Nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas,” is one option Dr. Kvitko may offer to help make you more comfortable during certain procedures. It is not intended to put you to sleep. You will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions Dr. Kvitko may have.

Once you are settled for your procedure Dr. Kvitko will ask you to breathe normally through your nose, and within a few short minutes you should start to feel the effects of the nitrous oxide. You may feel light-headed or a tingling in your arms and legs. Some people say their arms and legs feel heavy. Ultimately, you should feel calm and comfortable. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed.

Talk to Dr. Kvitko & Associates about whether nitrous oxide would be a good option for you.
