Periodontal Surgery
You have some soft tissue removed from around your teeth. In order to keep your mouth comfortable, the areas operated were covered with a surgical dressing which is to remain for several days.
To keep your mouth clean and to promote healing use ONLY salt water (one-half teaspoon of table salt in eight ounces of water) as a gentle rinse at least 5 times a day.
Do NOT eat any spicy, fibrous or hard foods (celery, spaghetti sauce, vinegar dressings, hard rolls, etc.) or drink any HOT liquids.
ANY cold drinks are permissible if swallowed. DO NOT SWISH!
You may use a brush and a very small amount of dentifrice to keep the other areas of your mouth clean, but be careful not to dislodge the dressing. If the dressing should come off within 2 or 3 days, please call to have it replaced. If the dressing breaks loose after 4 days and you are comfortable, just continue to rinse with the salt water until your next appointment.
If you have pain, take aspirin or one of the other analgesics. if the pain persists beyond 4 hours or becomes severe, call for a prescription.
After the dressing is removed at your next appointment, you will use a soft brush and the salt water to clean and stimulate the new tissue for about a week. The success of your treatment depends largely on how FAITHFUL YOU are in carrying out your home treatment instructions.
REMEMBER: RINSE AND BRUSH 5 TIMES A DAY!!!
